three day road response #1

"I am a Cree Indian from Moose Factory, and I am here to kill Germans."
I chose to read Three Day Road mostly because I like historical fiction, especially books about wars. One of my favourite books is All The Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr, which is a book set during the Second World War. Tales of the world wars have always intrigued me, whether they be about civilians or soldiers. This is one of the reasons why I'm so excited to read this book -- I think it will show the war from both sides. Already I'm learning about what has happened after the war while Niska is bringing Xavier back home, about the way she is so worried about him and about what happened to him.

My favourite parts so far have been the parts directly about the war, where Xavier and Elijah are in action. I know so many horrors happened during World War One that will probably make me sick to read about, but that's what I do love reading about: the nitty, gritty stuff. So far, this book has already given me this. I'm excited to see what else happens in this book.

I find it very interesting to see the contrast between Xavier in the past and Xavier in the present. I can tell something horrible has happened to him -- he doesn't speak, doesn't sleep, and is addicted to morphine, but the Xavier I see in his flashbacks is strong and wants to fight. War does such horrendous things to people that I'm not surprised to know Xavier has changed so much, but I can't wait to see how this happens. I hope the book pieces it together so that I don't truly find out what happens until the very end -- I want it to be a slow burn story that keeps me on the edge of my seat.

  1. Yes, the character development of Xavier is astonishing. He is a character that is stuck in my brain and one of the reasons I wanted to read Through Black Spruce. I recommend it for your summer reading.
