What qualities must one possess in order to be considered a hero?
In order to be considered a hero, I think someone must be willing to sacrifice themselves for another person - even a stranger - especially when the consequences could be dire. This can translate into being courageous, selfless, loving, and caring. They should be a good role-model and should be strong in their character. A hero usually isn't someone who is wishy-washy, or often changes their mind about what should be done. They stick by their decisions and morals.
Of course, heroes aren't always big things - they don't always sacrifice themselves for another person, or save children from a burning building. Heroes can be small; they can smile at someone on the street or donate money to charity. In this sense, a hero is someone who is thoughtful, friendly, and isn't afraid to do little things with love. They are often people who don't care what others think of them, and aren't afraid to be themselves if it means making someone else happy.
No matter what sort of hero a person is, they are always loving. Heroes are love, because we associate heroic acts with acts of love. A person is a hero because they do something they wouldn't be able to if they weren't a loving and caring person, and I think this is the most important quality in a hero.
I love the metaphor-"heroes are love". A refreshing look at human nature.
